Calgarians in Uganda

Uganda Partnership (UP) is a Calgary-based grassroots organization working in partnership with communities in Uganda to empower individuals and foster sustainable change.  Working directly with members of the community UP facilitates projects that are determined by the beneficiary’s which promotes responsibility and a commitment to successful outcomes.

UP is working on projects that include HIV/AIDS groups that provide income to widows and their families and help provide access to treatment, granting group loans to widows to provide housing or to improve their income generation capabilities and assisting children in paying for their yearly school fees.

Lindsay Scoville, Vice President of UP, is heading back to Africa on February 5, 2010 to continue her work with widowed mothers and orphans, and just like last year she’s looking to take as much with her as possible.

If you are interested in donating items to Lindsay and UP please click "read more" and browse through the list of items that they are looking for.

Help for Haiti

Over the last number of days you have no doubt heard stories and seen news casts from devastated areas of Haiti following the 7.0 earthquake that hit the Caribbean country on Tuesday.  Water is in short supply, communications are down and thousands of survivors have been forced onto the streets with no homes to return to.  Early estimates say the death toll could reach upwards of 500,000 people, but yet others say it's too early to know.

If you are interested in helping the relief effort in Haiti here are several links to Canadian organizations already on the ground.  MSF has a detailed update on their website where you can read about their efforts to replace damaged facilities with tented hospitals to treat the wounded.  Calgary based Samaritan's Purse has already sent its 4 person response assessment team to Haiti with basic supplies and water filters, 6 more doctors from the group are set to arrive today.  As well, the Haiti Association of Calgary will be setting up a bank account for people who wish to help with the relief efforts. To find out more information, contact the Haiti Association of Calgary at (403) 453-0108.
